OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — The town of Farragut will be installing a synthetic ice rink that will open in November. Leaders approved of the ice rink last week, which means no chillers and no Zamboni.

Farragut Alderman Drew Burnette said this was something the town had been asking for, for years. Burnette said he's happy to be the one bringing it to fruition.

While the rink will be made of plastic instead of ice, Burnette said you won't notice a difference.

"So the synthetic option that we've got coming here to the park is an ice-like feel and so you'll skate around on it like it's ice, but it's more economical to bring to a community, a smaller community," Burnette said.

The rink will be a new feature for the town's annual Light the Park event. According to leaders, the rink will be in the west parking lot adjacent to the Village Green shopping center.

Now, it's just a parking lot but come November it'll be a place for people to grab some hot chocolate and skate around with family and friends.

The rink will be open from Nov. 22 through Jan. 4 for people to enjoy during the holidays.
