UT's newest nursing students celebrate first day with school tradition

Nursing students at the University of Tennessee took part in a long-standing tradition in the program on their first day of the fall semester Wednesday.

Nursing students at the University of Tennessee took part in a long-standing tradition in the program on their first day of the fall semester Wednesday.

The 128 nursing students were admitted as freshman at UT in 2014. Wednesday was the first day of their nursing courses.

In keeping with an eight-year-old tradition in the nursing school, the group took a class photo in front of the Torchbearer on UT's campus to mark their first day. To complete the tradition, the same group will return to the Torchbearer in caps and gowns on graduation day for another photo.

Those 128 students were chosen from a pool of more than 1,000 applicants in 2014. At the time, the group as a whole had an average ACT score of 28.1 and an average GPA above 4.0.

Over the past two years, every member of the group has maintained a minimum GPA of 3.2 in order to progress into their nursing classes.
