Tennessee students compete in an online competition with rival Alabama ahead of the big game

The University of Tennessee students are taking their rivalry with Alabama beyond the football field, competing in Meta’s “Super Fan” campaign.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee students are gearing up for a showdown with Alabama this weekend — and not just on the football field. They’re also taking the rivalry online through Meta’s “Super Fan” campaign.

The campaign pits a class of University of Tennessee students against viral Alabama influencer Kylan Darnell.

"It kind of just lets us bring our creativity along with our passion for the Vols into a video, just kind of like a fun competition," Tarae Douglas, a student in the competition, said.

The students from Professor Matthew Pittman’s class have created videos using Meta AI to hype up the Volunteers. The video that gets the most engagement will be declared the winner.

"I think my class will win because 30 to 40 voices are more powerful than one voice," Pittman said. "Even though she might be a more famous voice."

Though the prize for the winning video is a pair of Meta AI Ray-Bans, many students are more interested in the bragging rights.

"I don't really care about that. I care more about the bragging rights," Nica Gumban, another student, said. "I can't wait to win on and off the field. So that's the goal for this weekend, hoping for the same result as 2022."

The competition will run until midnight on Saturday, Oct. 19.
