The University of Tennessee Medical Center received special recognition for its medical care on a prestigious national list.

For the third straight year, U.S. News and World Report named the hospital to its list of the America's Best Hospitals. Only the top three percent of hospitals in the country make the cut.

UT ranked 28th nationally for pulmonology care. It received high-performing honors in 10 different specialties, including cancer, cardiology, orthopedics and urology.

"As long as you focus on the patient, and the patient is going to be first, and what's best for the patient, both one on one and from an institutional standpoint, then good things are going to happen. And this just motivates us, gets us very excited and want to continue to bring and provide good care," said Dr. James Schamiyeh with UT Medical Center.

UT Medical Center ranked as the second-best hospital in Tennessee. Vanderbilt University Medical Center took the top spot.

A handful of other East Tennessee hospitals also ranked in the top five hospitals for the state, including Covenant Health's Parkwest Medical Center, Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center and Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

UT is the only one in our area to receive a national ranking for a specialty service.
