KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — On Tuesday, the Knoxville-Knox County Sports Authority updated people on its progress on the $116 million project to build a new stadium in the downtown Knoxville area.
Leaders said they are pleased with the progress and are looking forward to the spring of 2025 when the stadium is expected to be ready for the first pitch. It's expected to host the Tennessee Smokies baseball team.
Anywhere from 125-150 workers were downtown making progress on the stadium as of Feb. 27. The roof is expected to be finished later the same week.
Mohamed Abbas, the senior project manager at Denark Construction, said the project is about halfway complete and they plan on working on the field towards the end of this summer.
In addition, advocates from Bike-Walk Knoxville pitched a 900-square-foot space in the stadium for people to park their bikes. The idea is to better accommodate people biking to the stadium. Advocates cited examples in other communities with a stadium that implemented a similar space.
The CEO of Boyd Sports, Doug Kirchhofer, said they would talk with the design team and the city about the idea.
