Knoxville — Trying to beat the line at the airport can be pretty tough during the holidays but the TSA says it has a way to make traveling a little easier.
It's is hosting a TSA PreCheck sign up event this week at McGhee-Tyson Airport so you can get through security faster.
Roger Heyming faces the same problem at the airport almost every time.
"We wind up with one of us getting pre-check, random assignment, and the other one does not," Heyming said.
The TSA Precheck line almost always moves faster. The regular security line back at Thanksgiving was packed but the PreCheck line was not.
The TSA PreCheck allows you to leave your shoes on, your liquids and laptops in of your bag, and your lighter jackets on in the security line for five years.
More than five million people have enrolled in the program since it began in 2013," Eddie McGaha said.
McGaha is the Assistant Federal Security Director for TSA in East Tennessee.
"A lot of times that speeds up your process, and in turn reduces your wait times," McGaha said. "You can see it's a good benefit to be able to leave those things in your bags and on your person, and just be able to go through screening that way."
He says the holidays are busy at airports everywhere -- so save yourself some hassle.
"Don't wrap your packages because TSA may have to do a search," McGaha said. "They may have to look inside of it, and they don't want to mess up the wrapping paper."
He says to be careful with your jams, syrups or candles you might be carrying as gifts.
TSA's 3.4-ounce carry-on rule still applies for liquids.
"That's going to save some time," McGaha said. "3.4 ounces or larger is not allowed through the checkpoint. They're allowed in checked luggage."
TSA PreCheck costs $85 for five years of travel.
They're taking walk-ups near the Delta baggage claim for the rest of the week.
