KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — When you go to an animal shelter, you're probably expecting to see cats and dogs – not pigs.
But at Young-Williams Animal Shelter, several pot-bellied pigs are now up for adoption! The shelter said it's got piggies of all sizes, from big Dudley to tiny Wishbone.
The pigs all have pretty adorable names: Dumplin, Butterball, Tater Tot, Babe and several others are all looking for a home! You can see all the pigs on the shelter's website here.
In a Facebook post, the shelter said the adoption fee for pigs is $50. You can fill out an application on the website and then make an appointment.
According to Pig Placement Network, a pig adoption organization, pot-bellied pigs can grow up to be anywhere from 80 to 160 pounds! That's a big pig -- but still much smaller than the average farm pig. Those can weigh anywhere from 600 to 1000 pounds!
Young-Williams listed some fun facts on its Facebook post about the piggies:
- "Pigs are very smart! They learn their names very quickly, and with a little bit of treats they can learn many tricks!"
- "Pigs are hypoallergenic!"
- "Pigs are very social and love to be around other pigs/animals!"
- "Pigs can experience love, grief and even excitement!"
According to the Pig Placement Network, pot-bellied pigs can live an average of 12 to 15 years. They can be housebroken and taught to walk on a leash and harness. PPN has a list of information that can help you decide if a pig is right for your household.
