By KATE HOWARDStaff Writer - THE TENNESSEANTennessee became the first state in the nation where every county held a litter pick-up event this spring during the Great American Cleanup, Tennessee Department of Transportation officials said today.More than 15,000 people volunteered with Keep Tennessee Beautiful this spring to clean up litter throughout the state, the first time in the history of the clean-up effort that a state had complete participation, according to TDOT.Almost five million pounds of litter were collected through the program this year, according to a release. Other improvements include lake and park restorations, the removal and graffiti and planting more than 22,000 trees.
