Tellico Plains athlete killed in crash to be honored at state track meet

KYA is passing out bracelets at the meet for athletes to wear saying 'run4her,' in honor of her winning her fourth title.

TELLICO PLAINS, Tenn. — Monroe County is mourning the loss of a Tellico Plains High School senior and six-time TSSAA Class A state gold medal champion after she was confirmed to have died in a car crash on Saturday night.

The multi-vehicle crash took place in Loudon County on Interstate 75 at the 79.8 mile marker, according to a report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol. One vehicle was traveling northbound when it struck another, causing several others to come to an uncontrolled stop. An additional person was injured in the crash.

Darrah Wiseman was killed just before she was expected to run in a state track meet. Her coaches said there was no doubt she would have won her fourth state title on Thursday.

Knoxville Youth Athletics is passing out bracelets at the meet for athletes to wear saying "Running4Her," in honor of her fourth straight year winning two state titles.

"If you’re at state this week, consider honoring Darrah by picking up a wristband that will be at the Tennessee MileSplit tent," KYA said.

Wiseman's father is expected to wear her bib at the start and finish line.

Mitch Ingram, the Monroe County Mayor, released a statement sharing the news on social media, saying Wiseman was someone who made the entire county proud. His full statement can be read below.

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of a precious young life lost. Darrah Wiseman was a senior at Tellico Plains High School, but she made the entire county proud. Our hearts are broken, and words seem inadequate in the face of such profound sorrow.

As we mourn together, let us come together in prayer for her family, friends, classmates, and everyone whose lives have been forever touched by Darrah. May God grant her family peace, strength, and comfort in these difficult days. We are here for each other, standing united in love and support.

The Charles Hall Museum and Heritage Center also posted to social media after the tragic news. The museum said it was thrilled to have Wiseman serve as a Grand Marshal of the 2023 Inaugural. Wiseman also served as a Grand Marshal at the Oct 26, 2024, 2nd Annual Cherohala 5K to kick off the Cherohala Skyway Festival.

"Darrah kicked off the races and presented the medals at the end of the race," the museum said. "She obtained Tellico Plains legendary and historical status at such a young age and will forever live in our hearts and memories."

The center also said it continues to send prayers and thoughts for the Wiseman family and the entire community of Tellico Plains.
