Tabitha Smith to be remembered with memorial ride in Decatur

Tabitha Smith was found in the backseat of Meigs County Deputy Robert Leonard's cruiser after he accidentally drove into the Tennessee River.

DECATUR, Tennessee — A memorial ride for Tabitha Smith has been scheduled for Saturday, March 9 in Decatur.

According to an event posted on Facebook, the event is open to the public. Bikes, cars, and trucks are all welcome to ride. A $20 donation is also encouraged. All proceeds will go to Smith's family for funeral expenses.

Participants will meet at 10 a.m. at the Boys and Girls Club in Decatur and begin the ride at 11 a.m.

Memorial Ride Route: 

  • Leave the Boys and Girls Club and proceed to Georgetown Hwy 58/60
  • Hwy 60 to Dayton
  • Dayton to Hwy 27
  • Hwy 27 to Hwy 30
  • Finishing at the Boys and Girls Club

Smith was laid to rest on Saturday, Feb. 24 amongst family and friends, according to WRCB in Chattanooga.

Smith was in the back seat of Meigs County Sheriff Deputy Robert Leonard's patrol car when he accidentally drove off Blythe Ferry Lane into the Tennessee River, according to District Attorney Russell Johnson. The incident happened overnight on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Both Deputy Leonard and Smith were found the following afternoon by officials.
