Observation deck reopens at The Sunsphere after steelwork construction for new welcome center

The observation deck was closed for around two weeks while crews completed steelwork, an initial part of building a new welcome center at The Sunsphere.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Visitors at The Sunsphere can again head up to the landmark's observation deck, taking in views of Knoxville and its surrounding mountains.

The observation deck was closed for around two weeks while crews completed steelwork — an initial part of building a new welcome center at The Sunsphere. Visit Knoxville said after being closed for around two weeks, reservations to visit the observation deck piled up.

Leaders with the tourism group also said visitors should be wary of some ongoing construction while at The Sunsphere.

"One more step is completed and done on the build-out of the welcome center, which is not done yet. So, I do think, I want to definitely say that to everyone because I've had a few people get excited like we're done. But, we're not done. But, we are at a place where we're able to open the observation deck back up," said Kim Bumpas, the president of Visit Knoxville.

Visit Knoxville also said temporary closures at The Sunsphere would continue until construction ends.
