Sunsphere closing for less than 2 weeks as crews complete steelwork for new welcome center

The Sunsphere will be closed until June 9 for steelwork construction on the Sunphere Welcome Center.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Visitors will not be able to enter the Sunsphere from May 28 through June 9, while steelwork construction is completed for a new welcome center.

Visit Knoxville said the steelwork kicks off the construction phase of the new Sunsphere Welcome Center. It said the observation deck should reopen to visitors on June 10. The new welcome center is part of the second phase of upgrades to the Sunsphere.

It is expected to be built near the Clinch Avenue entrance and will feature staffed ticketing, expanded shopping, brochures and information about Knoxville in an enclosed space overlooking World's Fair Park.

Currently, purchasing tickets to explore the Sunsphere involves scanning a QR code near the entrance to pay for a ticket at a specific time slot, or buying tickets online. They cost up to $5 per person.
