Proposal to rezone 5 South Knox County parcels fails Monday evening

Commissioner Andy Fox said he wants to limit how the properties can be used, after controversy around possible development in the area.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — UPDATE: All proposals related to rezoning areas of South Knox County made by Andy Fox failed Monday evening.

--

ORIGINAL: Knox County commissioners are expected to soon consider a proposal that would send five parcels of property in South Knox County back to the planning commission for rezoning.

Andy Fox, a commissioner, said he wants to limit how the parcels can be used. It's an unusual move for a commissioner to request the Knoxville-Knox County Planning Commission reconsider zoning rules, which usually hears zoning requests from property owners themselves.

Four of the five parcels in the proposal are in a proposed development area between Chapman Highway and Sevierville Pike. Thunder Mountain Properties owns the property and said it plans to build hundreds of homes in the area. Fox previously said he is opposed to development that doesn't mix with the existing community. The fifth parcel is on Tipton Station Road.

All the parcels were already rezoned for commercial use and housing.

Some residents said they want to keep the nearby Bower Fied as it is and reduce crowding in subdivisions.

If the Knox County Commission approves Fox's request, it would again go before the planning commission to be considered.
