'I drank myself down to a 1.6 GPA' | UT Student hosts sober tailgate sharing his journey of recovery

Senior Morgan Schmitz held the tailgate to give back to the community which supported him on his path to recovery.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tailgating is an important aspect of gameday on Rocky Top. And while it often includes alcohol, University of Tennessee Senior Morgan Schmitz said it's not always necessary.

"I had to get sober about a year ago because I drank myself down to a 1.6 GPA," Schmitz said.

A journey in recovery which he hopes can act as a path for those who are in similar positions.

"If more people come out and say that yes, I struggle with drinking. Yes, I struggle with alcohol. Maybe that could be somebody else's survival guide," Schmitz said.

During Saturday's Georgia vs UT game, Schmitz brought bands and organizations together for a sober tailgate.

"On college campuses, sober spaces are very limited and there's not enough people having the idea that it's fun to be sober," he said.

Schmitz hopes that by throwing this event he could help guide others on their journey in recovery.

"Maybe somebody stopping by the tent doesn't have a problem," he said. "But maybe their mom does, maybe they have a brother or a sister."

Morgan is just one of the many college students who have struggled with alcohol and substance abuse. According to the National Institute of Health, over 60% of full-time students have consumed alcohol and 39% report that they binge drink.

"It's so easy to get caught up in statistics when it comes to people who suffer from addiction, and struggle with addiction, then to think of these numbers as real people," Schmitz said.

He hopes to never return to the person he was when he was drinking.

"I know exactly what's waiting for me, I know exactly what's back, and I don't want to go back there because it hasn't changed, I've changed," he said.
