Beech Mountain, NC — While the emerald green gates to the Land of Oz are closed for most of the year, the park opens on select days in June for an event called “Journey with Dorothy.”
Dorothy leads guests through her family’s Kansas home, which is decorated like the MGM film.
“I feel like everybody, whether they want to admit it, they are an Oz fan. We have diehard fans of the film, people who just want to see the park, little kids dressed like Dorothy and adults like Dorothy. It's the youngest kids you can think of all the way up to Grandpa and grandma,” explained Sean Barrett, a spokesperson for the park.
“Journey with Dorothy” lets guests become part of the story. Visitors play the tin man, scarecrow, and lion, and skip along the yellow brick road with their arms intertwined.
“For our Dorothy performers, they get to work with a lot of different people and play off of them. It's not as strict as they’re used to. The guests get into it. They do the voices. They know the songs. You think that dad's not going to skip with Dorothy, and dad skips with Dorothy. So, it's really fun to watch,” Barrett said.
The tickets are $25 and sell out quickly when they’re released before June each year.
