Second Harvest warns about scammers illicitly asking for donations in public

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee said Wednesday that it learned people were using the nonprofit's name and logo to illicitly ask for donations in public locations and on street corners.

It said the people may use buckets to collect donations, but they are not affiliated with Second Harvest or any of its community partners. In a post on social media, the nonprofit said people should reach out to authorities if they see donation scams. They also said people who want to donate to the nonprofit can reach out to 865-521-0000 to make sure they are donating to a legitimate fundraiser.

Second Harvest said it would "would never condone collection efforts that are unsafe."
