HELENWOOD, Tenn. — Raezack's Grill and Deli has fed Scott County residents a Thanksgiving meal for the fifth year in a row.
Michelle King, co-owner of the restaurant, said after church one day she wanted to do something for the community and she decided to give out free holiday meals.
"The very first time we fed 200," King said. "And last year we fed 700. This year, I'm hoping I made it. I made their food for 1000."
Those wanting a dinner could either pick it up in the drive-thru or dine in at the restaurant from noon to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
The food was served on a first-come, first-serve basis and no reservations were allowed. Turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, green beans, rolls, drinks and dessert were included in the meal.
King said she starts planning the week of Thanksgiving and it consists of early mornings and long nights.
"It's very, very blessed and humbling," King said. It's just whenever you open the doors right now it's hustle and bustle. But whenever you open the doors and you see people come in, it just makes your heart full."
King said people will come if they don't have a big family, can't afford to cook a meal or simply if they need a place to come together with family.
Deborah Lewallen said she came with family and friends and it's her first time eating at the restaurant for Thanksgiving.
"I'd heard about it and just never came before and I just decided to come today," Lewallen said.
She said her husband passed away some time ago and she recently had a health scare, but she's thankful to be alive and spending time with loved ones.
"I'm thankful for RaeZack's," Lewallen said. "I just love the food here and, and camaraderie that you have here in the community."
At the end of the free meal giveaway, King said they served 980 people.
She said she plans to make this a Thanksgiving tradition and continue to do it every year.
