KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Children of Knoxville firefighters have a new opportunity to help fund their future in education. Pittman Properties announced a scholarship for graduating high school seniors.
The $5,000 award can be used at any four-year university, community college or vocational school. It honors the service of the late William “Bill” Pittman, who joined the Knoxville Fire Department in 1963 and was promoted to fire marshal until his retirement in 1998, according to a release from Pittman Properties.
“My father encouraged my own education and provided the opportunity for me to graduate from the University of Tennessee,” Bill Pittman, principal of Pittman Properties, said. “I am proud we can honor my father and his distinguished career by supporting that opportunity for another firefighter’s child to advance their education.”
Graduating seniors can apply for the annual scholarship beginning in the 2025-26 school year. The Knox Education Foundation will provide details on how eligible students can apply in January 2025.
“When the Pittman family approached us to assist with establishing this scholarship, we immediately agreed as this type of scholarship will be meaningful to 95% of the folks we serve,” Michael Taylor, CEO of Knox Education Foundation, said. “We are looking forward to awarding the first scholarship in 2025 and proud to be a partner in serving the Knoxville Fire Department employees.”
