Salvation Army will expand shelter capacity during cold snap

The Salvation Army works with local government to have more shelter space when temperatures dip into dangerously low levels.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Salvation Army will increase its shelter capacity this weekend as colder temperatures are expected to move through East Tennessee.

According to a press release, the charity will work with the Knoxville-Knox County Office of Housing Stability and other groups, including churches, to make sure that anyone who needs shelter has a place to stay.

The Salvation Army Shelter, at 409 North Broadway, will be open overnight only for the next four days,  from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., Friday night through Monday night, starting November 29.

People who need shelter are invited to check-in at the door.

The Salvation Army is also taking monetary donations and donations of dog food, blankets, coats and socks. The group is asking people to not bring any other clothing items as donations. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter.

“Our goal is to save lives and demonstrate the compassion of Christ by providing refuge to the most vulnerable in our community,” said Knoxville Area Salvation Army Command Major Cam Henderson.
