CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Division of Forestry reported a wildfire in the Renegade Mountain area on Moytoy Road.
According to the Crossville/Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency, crews were working to put out the "fire with multiple structures." Officials asked that Renegade Mountain residents evacuate earlier in the day.
According to the crews on the scene, the fire was 250 acres large and was 100% contained as of Wednesday night at around 7:45 p.m.
EMA staff said they expect the fire to burn all night and possibly for the next week until significant rainfall moves into the region. They said Division of Forestry crews would be back Thursday morning to double-check containment lines.
Amber Garrison, the Vice President of the Renegade Mountain Community Club, said two condo buildings with several units were involved in the wildfire. She said around two hours before the fire arrived, firefighters went door-to-door in the mountain to warn people they needed to evacuate.
EMS responders also said they treated firefighters for minor injuries, but have not had to transport anyone to a medical facility because of injuries.
She also said conditions on the mountain may have helped the fire spread, with high winds and underbrush fueling it.
There is a temporary shelter for people in the area at Crab Orchard City Hall and Crab Orchard Christian Church. According to the Red Cross, 217 Wheeler Lane in Crab Orchard is being converted from an evacuation shelter to an overnight shelter. Garrison said pizza was being served to anyone who needed to evacuate, and cots were put out for people who needed to stay overnight.
A Red Cross spokesperson said volunteers plan to remain on scene to help those in need.
Garrison also said Crab Orchard city hall was opened to people who needed to evacuate.
