The urban chicken ordinance is waiting for final approval from the Metropolitan Planning Commission and the city council.If passed, the ordinance would allow city homeowners to keep up to six hens on their property.Saturday, more than 20 homeowners took the "Raising Urban Hens 101" workshop at the Knoxville Botanical Garden. Most of them plan on building a chicken coop and raising hensif the city passes the ordinance.The garden held the seminar so local hen-raising experts could teach the benefits of keeping chickens and the proper care for hens."We were thinking about getting chickens for the eggs and also to get rid of the bugs in the garden because we have a vegetable garden," said homeowner Gerd Duscher."I really want to use the eggs. I love to bake and I love to eat eggs," homeowner Sarah Inwood added.The zoning portion of the ordinance must be passed by the MPC before it goes back before the city council./>
