KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A small airplane crashed into the Tennessee River near Island Home Park on Monday, said the Knoxville Fire Department.
The pilot was able to escape the plane without injury, KFD said after arriving on the scene.
The Knoxville Police Department said crews responded at around 7:30 p.m. after the small, single-engine plane crashed into the river near Downtown Island Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration will lead the investigation into the plane crash, KPD said. The FAA was notified just after the arrival of KPD and KFD and will focus on determining what contributed to the crash.
KPD also said the male pilot, who was the only person in the plane was accounted for and was able to escape without injury.
"The plane is accounted for as well, though it remains overturned and submerged in the water," KPD said.
Further efforts for the recovery of the plane are pending until the FAA completes its preliminary investigation. The FAA said it was a "single-engine Progressive Aerodyne SeaRey," and the National Transportation Safety Board would also investigate.
Additional information, such as the circumstances surrounding the crash and the identity of anyone involved, was not immediately available on Monday. This story will be updated when more information is available.
