TENNESSEE, USA — The Tennessee Department of Transportation has a new ferry boat named after legendary Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt.
The boat, coined "The Summitt," will provide service between Middle Tennessee's Benton and Houston counties, pushing a barge known as the "The Volunteer" across the Tennessee River. It replaces a previous boat that provided ferry service for 67 years, TDOT said.
On Dec. 13, a ceremony was held for the new ferry with representatives from the Summitt Foundation, University of Tennessee women's athletics director emeritus Joan Cronan, and students from Henry County High School.
TDOT said the new ferry cost nearly $3.3 million and was funded by state and federal dollars.
The ferry service is available 365 days a year. For more information, click here.
