MORRISON, Tenn. — Morristown leaders said Wednesday that clean-up work is expected to start in the coming days as the demolition of the historic Parks-Belk Building continues. The building was burned down in early January, and the man accused of starting the fire was arrested.
Leaders said the damage was so extensive that the historic building could not be repaired. Instead, they said the building would need to come down due to safety concerns. Its owners said they plan to build apartments and storefronts in the space where the building is located, while also preserving some parts of its historic character.
As of Wednesday, city leaders said the top floor of the building was almost gone. They also said on social media that crews are working to soon reopen Main Street to traffic.
"In the meantime, all downtown Morristown businesses are still open. We encourage you to continue shopping and dining in downtown and show your support to these local merchants," they said on social media.
