KPD encourages people to 'Park Smart' as dozens of firearms have been stolen this year so far

Knoxville police are encouraging people to remember to lock their cars, take their keys and remove or safely secure valuables, especially guns.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Police Department reported at least 33 guns have been stolen in car burglaries in Knoxville this year, including nine in the past weekend alone.

KPD is encouraging people to always "park smart." This means remembering to lock your car, take your keys and remove or safely secure valuables -- especially guns.

The most recent report on a car break-in was on Sunday, April 28 on Executive Park Drive. KPD said cars were broken into at parking lots of two hotels where around 20 attempted break-ins were reported.

Police have not yet identified who may have been involved but said there was evidence suggesting they were trying to steal guns.
