One year later: Sweetwater relives total solar eclipse with a 'reclipse'

"We wanted to let the people know they have something here, and we'll always remember the eclipse of 2017 that happened in Sweetwater," Doyle said.

SWEETWATER, Tenn. — One year after the eclipse, the skies over Sweetwater, TN turned dark for a different reason; rain.

Sweetwater, Tennessee was one of the little-known cities that became a gathering place for people across the globe to visit and get to witness the once-in-a-lifetime event on Aug. 21, 2017.

Sweetwater held a "re-clipse" event on Tuesday, Aug 21, 2018 at 10 a.m.

The looming storm clouds didn’t stop a crowd of business owners, residents, and visitors from gathering downtown to watch Mayor Doyle Lowe unveil a new town clock they purchased with profits from the 2017 eclipse.

“We wanted to let the people know they have something here, and we'll always remember the eclipse of 2017 that happened in Sweetwater,” Doyle said.

The new clock is just one fraction of the visible impacts of the eclipse.

Mayor Lowe says the eclipse put Sweetwater on the map in terms of attracting future businesses. Lowe wouldn’t elaborate much, but says the town is in the running for an industrial development that has the potential to bring hundreds of new jobs to the area.

Lowe says they should know by the end of the year if Sweetwater is selected.

“The eclipse has been really good to Sweetwater,” Doyle said.
