The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is on track to get a new supercomputer in the next 5 years.

The Department of Energy released a "request for proposals" for companies who want to develop at least 2 new supercomputers.

One will go to Oak Ridge and another will be placed at a national lab in California. The new systems are part of a $1.8 billion project and will likely come online in 2022 or 2023.

The computers will be 50 to 100 times faster than the current fastest supercomputer in the U.S.

The DOE said they could be used for everything from nuclear security to helping fight cancers.
