OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Drivers in Oak Ridge are starting to get frustrated over construction along South Illinois Avenue. About 2 miles of the road have been under construction for over a month, and some people said their cars are taking damage.
"I hit a pothole and the front end of my truck, all my bushings went bad in it — so I had to pay a lot of money for it. It's just bad, it's a dangerous road", said Jacob Daniels, an Oak Ridge resident.
Daniels said he's had a few close calls with other drivers in that lane because it is uneven. He said some drivers have a hard time driving in the grooves of the road. He also said he wanted to warn people to be cautious if they're not familiar with the area.
"They should be very cautious, it drives differently. It's all just very different," he said.
People on social media are also calling for something to be done about the roads.
"For Real. The road is messing up tires and causing wrecks. Get it paved already. And yes I know it's the state blah blah blah...Who cares. Just get it done," said Facebook user Samantha Tucker.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation said it's not clear when the construction will be finished because a lot of the work is dependent on the weather and changing temperatures in the fall can create challenges.
Mark Nagi, a spokesperson for the department, gave a statement.
"The majority of the mainline paving is complete, but side roads and businesses remain," he said. "(We) don't have a firm finishing date, as this work is temperature-dependent."
