OAK RIDGE, Tenn — The city of Oak Ridge paused its airport project and will find a new location after the announcement of Orano's enrichment facility.
“The State and the City have pledged to work together on the possible relocation of the airport to accommodate one of the largest, single economic investments in the history of the State of Tennessee,” Oak Ridge Mayor Warren Gooch said. “We are committed to evaluate available options to determine the optimal path forward.”
The city has support from airport project grantors including TDOT Aeronautic and the Appalachian Regional Commission for finding a new site for the Oak Ridge Airport.
Oak Ridge has discussed building the airport for more than a decade. More than $11 million has been invested in the project.
In August, a federal assessment found the airport would not significantly impact the environment.
An airport in Oak Ridge would support existing assets, reinforce the region's manufacturing base and diversify Oak Ridge and neighboring economies, the city said.
