Clinton HS officials ask TSSAA to reinstate football wins, say ineligible player was actually eligible

The TSSAA fined Clinton High School and forfeited wins from the school's 2023 football season when the ineligible player was first reported.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Anderson County School officials are asking for the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association to reinstate Clinton High School's 2023 season football wins after discovering a transcript error.

In a letter to the TSSAA, Clinton High School Principal Robbie Herrell and Anderson County Schools Assistant Director Greg Deal said a player originally thought to be ineligible after not earning the needed number of credits was actually eligible.

The letter said that the credits were placed in the wrong spot on the student's transcript. The document was dated May 10, 2024, apparently in error, because the letter was sent this month.

"Upon further review of the student's transcript it was found that an additional credit was earned for government and economics," the letter states. "Those credits were placed under 2022 instead of 2023, where they should have been placed."

The TSSAA fined Clinton High School and forfeited wins from the school's 2023 football season when the ineligible player was first reported.

The school's football coach, Darell Keith, was also told he wouldn't be coaching the team moving forward.

Clinton High also has been embroiled in a grade-changing scandal that has resulted in the departures of the principal and two teachers.

Herrell and Deal said that transcripts proving the student completed and earned the correct credits were attached to the letter. WBIR did not receive those documents to corroborate.
