CLAXTON, Tenn. — Claxton Elementary School was built in the early 1900s and has seen thousands of children walk through its doors. But, those doors will soon be closing.
A new elementary school is set to take its place just up the road from the original school. The new school will be a state-of-the-art facility with a focus on subjects like Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics — a set of topics also known as STEAM.
The school has held a STEAM certification for the past couple of years and hopes that this new building will reinforce its dedication to that. This new building comes as the current school struggles to host the students that are enrolled. Some teacher aides have had to start teaching students in the hallways instead of actual classrooms due to issues with the school.
Jennifer Coleman, Claxton Elementary School's principal, said she couldn't be more ready for this new building.
"We are desperate for a new school, this is going to be a state-of-the-art facility. So, we're extremely excited about that," she said.
The Anderson County School Board host a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 5 for the community to ask questions and give feedback on the new school.
