CLINTON, Tennessee — The Clinton Police Department said one of its officers shot a man after an altercation at a Clinton apartment complex Sunday night. TBI said 25-year-old Isaiah Gregory Hill was pronounced dead later that night at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said an officer responded to the apartment on Medaris Street in Clinton on a report of a "suicidal individual." Police Chief Vaughn Becker said the officer responded around 8:11 p.m.
Josh Alan Brooks, a neighbor, said he saw Hill outside the apartment with a knife.
"Officer told him to put it down multiple times. He didn't listen," Brooks said. "The boy darted out with a knife in his hand at (the officer). That's when the shots were fired."
Brooks said the officer immediately started giving Hill first aid until firefighters and EMS arrived on the scene. The eyewitness said he could hear the gunshots from his home.
"It's going to be hard to swallow when you lose a neighbor that's not far from me," Brooks said. "It's a sad day in time. It's hard, but you gotta move on."
TBI and CPD have not said whether Hill had a gun. Leslie Earhart, a TBI Public Information Officer, said the investigation is ongoing and TBI wouldn't be able to release any more details.
The police department also said District Attorney General Dave Clark was briefed about the shooting.
CPD has not released the name of the officer in the shooting. They said the officer sustained minor injuries, was taken to the hospital and has been released.
