MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — An intersection in Morristown will stay closed for a while while crews continue working to clean up after a historic building was burned down. According to a post on social media, the N. Cumberland Street. and W. Main Street intersection would remain closed "for up to several weeks."
The road will be closed while crews continue cleaning up after the Parks-Belk Building was burned down. The extent of the damage requires crews to demolish the building, and city leaders previously said that its developer plans to replace it with a new building honoring the old one.
The city said it has already started the process of soliciting bids to complete the demolition work and had a Friday deadline to collect bids.
"It is anticipated that the initial phase to remove the hazardous structure should take approximately one week. Once the Building Department determines that it is safe to reopen the streets, vehicular and pedestrian traffic can be restored," the city said on social media.
Heavy trucks can use US 25-E as a detour around the closed intersection, while local traffic can use side streets, the city said on social media.
