Monroe County authorities capture escaped inmate

Monroe County Sheriff's Office captured a 28-year-old escaped inmate from the Monroe County Jail.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office captured an inmate who escaped the Monroe County Jail around 5 p.m. on Sunday.

MCSO said they captured 28-year-old Ricky Dale Dotson II without incident in Athens, Tenn. and transported him back to the Monroe County Jail. Dotson is being charged with escaping from the facility.

Deputies said they found him at a Super 8 Motel at 2541 Decatur Pike in Athens after a joint effort with the U.S. Marshal Service's Smoky Mountains Fugitive Task Force.

According to MCSO, Dotson escaped the jail by climbing a razor wire fence that surrounds the recreation yard. A corrections officer tried to grab Dotson's feet as he was climbing, but Dotson escaped as the officer called for backup.

Monroe County Sheriff Tommy J. Jones II said in a release that the sheriff's office had K9s working to help find Dotson.

Dotson was arrested for aggravated burglary and was scheduled to appear in court on February 20.
