KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — According to U.S. Census Data, the median household income in Tennessee is $48,309 a year. For perspective, that is around $23 an hour.
Some families say the high cost of living is leading stay-at-home moms to pick up extra income while raising a family. Robyn Leitch traded her nine to five corporate job to work at home and raise her kids.
"I've seen a difference in my children," Leitch said.
She wanted to be a stay-at-home mom to devote more time to her family, however, financial pressures and childcare prices made it unrealistic.
"I couldn't afford it — and the price of diapers is so expensive," she said.
It wasn't until a few months before that she came across a job posting that she said was too good to be true.
"I was like this cannot be true — that I can own an income while caring for my family," Leitch said.
Kimberly O'Neal helps stay-at-home moms find family-friendly jobs. She created "Modern Day Stay At Home Mom," an online platform that connects businesses to motherhood.
"We have so many moms who are very highly educated who have come from corporate and are CEOs," O'Neal said.
She also said many stay-at-home moms look for extra income for financial support.
"We see more moms wanting this project-based type roles where to as they can come in and do something and step away," O'Neal said.
A mother from North Carolina also landed a job through the platform.
"I've been able to help financially and have flexible hours and choose my schedule," said Sarah Hughes.
