Knox County Criminal Court Clerk Mike Hammond announces prostate cancer diagnosis

Hammond said it was detected early and that he and his doctors would start working on a treatment plan soon.

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — Knox County Criminal Court Clerk Mike Hammond announced Tuesday morning that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

"My annual physical exam led to my doctor ordering a second PSA test which showed further elevated levels," Hammond said in a release. "My urologist took biopsies which showed very early cancer in a small portion of my prostate."

Hammond said it was detected early, which meant it was treatable, and that he and his doctors would start working on a treatment plan soon.

He then encouraged every man who has not thought about a regular prostate screening to get one.

"It's a simple test, called a prostate-specific antigen or PSA test," he said. "I'm fortunate my condition was discovered early and at its most treatable. In this case, good things don't come to those who wait; instead, it's quite the opposite. Please do not delay."

Hammond also said he will continue to be the Clerk and campaign for Knox County Mayor in 2026.
