The wreck happened on Saturday, Aug. 31 on Highway 68, District Attorney General Russell Johnson said.

MEIGS COUNTY, Tenn. — UPDATE (9/3): Amber Green's mother gave 10News an update on the children involved in the Meigs County crash over the weekend.

Melissa Smith told 10News that the two boys, a 10-year-old and a 9-year-old, will be discharged from the East Tennessee Children's Hospital soon. The two youngest, a 6-year-old and a 1-year-old are still in intensive care but have "promising brain activity."

PREVIOUS STORY (9/2)

A mother was killed and her four children are in critical condition after a car wreck in Meigs County, according to District Attorney General Russell Johnson.

Johnson also said heavy rain was a factor in the crash. He said a driver passed other cars, then hydroplaned into the car with the mother and her children. He said the Tennessee Highway Patrol called its Critical Incident Response Team, but the team did not arrive because of the weather.

On Monday, THP identified the woman as Amber M. Green, 30. The other driver involved in the crash was identified as Kristen M. Kruse, 38.

Sam Shaffer said he was traveling behind the hydroplaned car before it crashed. He said he noticed the black car was speeding and passing other cars. He said the car lost control and slid into oncoming traffic, hitting a white car.

He also said the car ended up in a ditch and he called 911, then got out and helped the children and saw that their mother was dead in the driver's seat. Shaffer said he spoke to authorities to give an eye-witness account.

The wreck happened on Saturday, Aug. 31 on Highway 68, according to authorities. Shaffer sent 10News a more specific location, of the intersection of Highway 68 and 305 in the Ten Mile community.

The children's father had passed away in a separate wreck a year ago, according to Johnson. No alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash, Johnson said.
