MEDIC offering free blood tests for prostate cancer ahead of annual blood drive competition against Florida

The competition begins on Sept. 16 and wraps up on Sept. 20. MEDIC said donors will get a special t-shirt.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee will take on Florida next week, but not on the football field.

MEDIC Regional Blood Center is hosting its annual blood donation competition against a Florida blood center starting on Sept. 16 and lasting until Sept. 20. During the competition, MEDIC competes with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers to see which organization can collect the most blood donations. MEDIC said Tennessee donors would also get a special t-shirt.

People can donate at any MEDIC location. Its main facility is located in downtown Knoxville, at 1601 Ailor Avenue. The blood center is a main provider of blood products for hospitals and medical facilities across East Tennessee.

Men can also take advantage of free blood tests for prostate cancer at MEDIC locations across East Tennessee. On Thursday and Friday, people can get free blood screenings for prostate cancer through the Eddie Check program.

Over its 20-year history, Eddie Check has provided 16,000 prostate-specific antigen blood tests that can indicate the presence of prostate cancer.
