MCSO: Man experiencing 'mental status change' fatally shot by homeowner after home invasion reported Thursday morning

The person accused of breaking into the home was shot and killed by the homeowner, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

MONROE COUNTY, Tenn. — UPDATE (Sept. 6): The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said at around 5 a.m. on Thursday, deputies responded to a home on Ogle Road after receiving a call about a man having a "mental status change." The sheriff's office said he had recently been released from a mental health facility.

The sheriff's office said the man's family was concerned after he had previously entered random houses. Deputies said they could not find him at first.

More than an hour later, the sheriff's office said deputies were sent to a home on Brunner Road after receiving a call about a home invasion. Authorities said the homeowner woke up to dogs barking and lights on inside his home.

He went to investigate, armed with a gun, according to authorities. A release from the sheriff's office said he found the man inside and took him outside at gunpoint while waiting for law enforcement to arrive.

MCSO said the suspect then shoved the homeowner aside and re-entered the home, locking the homeowner out. The sheriff's office said other family members were inside the home and so the homeowner shot at the man, hitting him from outside.

After he was wounded, the man went further into the home and left before collapsing on a lawn. Authorities said the homeowner and first responders gave medical aid, but the man died after he was taken to a hospital.
