KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — McGhee Tyson Airport is permanently closing one of its parking lots to make way for new construction.
The airport announced Wednesday the surface lot is permanently closed for construction on the parking garage expansion and terminal roadway improvement project.
Parking is still available in the garage, Terminal A and B lots as well as the Economy C lot. Airport officials encouraged travelers to visit their website before they arrive for their flights.
Back in February, airport officials said the parking garage expansion is expected to take a year and a half and add 3,500 new parking spaces.
The airport is seeing increasingly more travelers each year. In 2023, it reported 2,835,773 total travelers going through the airport. It said it was a record number of travelers, up from 2,495,737 in 2022. Because of that, the airport said it needs more flights and more space.
