KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — McGhee Tyson Airport is preparing for rehabilitation work that will shut down one of its two runways.
This is due to the airport's expansion projects, such as a new parking area. According to a spokesperson for the airport, this closure isn't anything new. It completed a major project a few years ago that shut down one of the runways for six years.
The airport stressed that the closure shouldn't make any noticeable difference to travelers.
"If we're doing our job, people won't even notice that construction is going on on our runways as we rehab the new runway system. One of the things that they may see is a lot of construction flying in and out. that might be the only thing that they notice," said Becky Huckaby, a spokesperson for the airport. "But if we're doing everything the way it should be done, they won't see any operational impact."
The airport is still in the planning process of the project with construction set to start sometime in 2025.
