KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee is working to implement a new parking strategy across its campus. As part of those changes, several free spots located near the McClung Museum faced the possibility of becoming paid, hourly spots.

On Friday, the museum said it worked with the university to keep ten free parking spaces for its visitors. It said those spots will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. To use the spots, people will need to present license plate information at the museum's guest services desk. Cars that are not validated will be charged $2 an hour for parking.

The museum is located near Circle Park, an area that also houses the university's communications programs and administrative offices. As of Aug. 1, visitors need to pay hourly to leave their cars at one of its 40 spots.

Typical parking at Circle Park is $2 per hour. UT said student and staff permits are not valid in those spaces. Even if someone has a parking pass to park in commuter or non-commuter lots, they will need to pay hourly to park in Circle Park.

To submit payments, people can either scan a QR code on signs within the parking area or use an app to pay as they arrive. Payment is required 24 hours per day.

McClung Museum said it hoped by offering 10 free parking spots, it could keep visitors engaged in its programs. The museum often rolls out new exhibits and hosta a variety of lectures, screenings, classes, demonstrations and events throughout the year. It is also free to visit. Currently, it offers an exhibit co-curated by representatives from four Native Nations connected to Knox County, as well as a history print collection and oil paintings.
