Maryville police respond to attempted murder suicide at Blount Co. Adult Probation

When police arrived on scene, they found Rikki Allen, 43, and Brian Yates, 39, with gunshot wounds.

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Maryville Police Department (MPD) responded to an attempted murder suicide at the Blount County Adult Probation Thursday morning. 

According to police officials, around 9:45 a.m. someone reported a shooting at the Blount County Adult Probation office at the center on East Lamar Alexander Parkway. The caller said two people were shot. 

When police arrived on scene, they found Rikki Allen, 43, and Brian Yates, 39, with gunshot wounds. 

MPD said Allen was shot in the head and taken to UT Medical Center. She is in critical condition. Yates shot himself in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Several probation officers and probationers were present at the time of the shooting. No one else was injured. Police said Allen and Yates were both shot once with the same .38 revolver. 

According to police Allen and Yates share two children and were estranged.

The Blount County Probation Department will be closed until Monday, Nov 18. All scheduled probation appointments for the rest of the week have been canceled. The scheduled DUI school on Saturday, Nov. 16 has been canceled. The Cades Cove Museum will be closed throughout the weekend as well.

Police said the situation was contained and there was no active danger to the public but there was a significant police presence in the area. 

Along with Maryville police, the Maryville Fire Department and AMR responded with assistance from BCSO.
