The Maryville Police Department officer killed Thursday afternoon died 105 years to the day after the force lost its first person in the line of duty, according to the Officer Down Peace Memorial.

Authorities identified the officer killed as Kenny Moats, 32, of Maryville.

The department has lost four officers since Aug. 25, 1911, when Marshal J. Henry Clemens died as a result of gunfire, the website shows.

In East Tennessee, most municipal departments have lost at least one officer in the line of duty.

Recent deaths in the region include the shooting death of Roane County Deputy Bill Jones, shot and killed in May 2006 along with ridealong friend Mike Brown outside a Roane County farmhouse.

In March 2004, Loudon County Deputy Jason Scott was killed by the teenage son of a Loudon County prosecutor during a shootout.

The Knoxville Police Department has lost 15 officers in work-related deaths, according to the memorial.

Among the most recent: Mark Anthony Williams, who was fatally shot in the back in July 1989 while riding a motorcycle, according to the memorial.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office has lost nine officers in work-related deaths, according to the memorial. Among the most recent: Assistant Chief Deputy Keith Lyon was killed in a vehicle collision on Schaad Road.
