BCSO investigating former Blount County Schools teacher, track coach

The Blount County Sheriff's Office confirmed it is investigating former teacher Shane Rewis.

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. — The Blount County Sheriff's Office confirmed it is investigating former Blount County Schools teacher Shane Rewis.

Blount County Schools said Shane Rewis is no longer employed with the district, and a website for Heritage High School athletic teams lists Rewis as the school's boys' track coach, for at least some time.

A spokesperson with the BCSO said it couldn't release information about what Rewis is being investigated for at this time, however, 10News has requested his personnel file from BCS and the Tennessee State Board of Education.

The investigation into Rewis comes after former BCS teacher Joseph Dalton pleaded guilty to five counts of offensive touching last month, connected to events that allegedly occurred with the school system for nearly 20 years.

According to documents in that case, Dalton was accused of touching young girls inappropriately at schools including Porter, Friendsville and Walland elementary schools. The first complaint lodged against Dalton was made in August 2005. His personnel file shows he could remain employed with the district until Sept. 2023, despite years of complaints being filed against him.

"I wish I would've seen it a long time ago when it happened," A woman who said her family filed a complaint against Dalton said. " I was a little disappointed in the school system for letting it go on for that time," said Gracie Jones.

Dalton's charges are misdemeanors and carry a maximum sentence of six months behind bars. His sentencing is scheduled for November.

"There's a whole bunch of parents out there that think the man ought to get to spend at least one night in the jail, in the general population," said Mike Akard, Blount County Commissioner.

Akard spoke to a packed house at a commission meeting last month, where commissioners voted to expand an investigation into Dalton.

A representative with BCS said at the meeting that an outside agency has been consulted about doing a "human resources" investigation into the school system, but only wants to investigate instances that occurred over the past 10 years.

Complaints against Dalton started nearly 20 years ago, and members of the Blount County Commission said they want the investigation to go back as far as the complaints do.
