More gates, additional parking planned at McGhee Tyson Airport

There are currently 12 gates at the airport, but that could expand to 23 gates by 2040.

ALCOA, Tenn. — Changes could be on the way to McGhee Tyson Airport.

The airport's board met recently and went over plans from a developer that include upgrades and the addition of more gates.

There are currently 12 gates at the airport, but that could expand to 23 gates by 2040. Airport officials expect that by that year, more than four million people will visit the airport each year.

Some of these expansion plans would also allow international flights to leave from McGhee Tyson Airport, however, airport officials said the first phase of the expansion is focused on domestic flights.

Any gates fully dedicated for international travel aren't on the books right now.

These plans to expand the airport come as crews are already working to build more parking for travelers.
