Maryville Police respond to 'threat to campus safety' at Maryville College on Sunday

Maryville Police determined there was no 'imminent threat' to campus

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Maryville College officials said Maryville Police responded to a possible threat to campus safety on Sunday.

The school's Director of Safety and Security Dennis Humphrey said in an email to students, staff and faculty that after an investigation police determined there was no imminent threat and won't be taking any further actions.

"Moving forward, the College will be handling this situation through our policies and procedures pertaining to student behavior," Humphrey said, in part, in the email. "We have acted – and will continue to act – to ensure that no one involved poses a threat to the campus community."

Humphrey wrote that all students, staff and faculty are encouraged to report any concerns about potential threats or violence to authorities.

"If you see or hear something, please say something," he wrote.

The investigation at Maryville College comes days after two high school students were charged with making school threats in Knox County.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office charged 18-year-old Charles McCarter Friday and said the student made threats of mass violence. A 14-year-old Halls High School student was also arrested Friday, for making similar threats.

“I can't stress enough as I have said many times before, we will take every threat against our schools seriously," KCSO Sheriff Tom Spangler said at the time. "There will be consequences for this type of behavior and as long as I am the Sheriff it will not be tolerated in Knox County.
