Case of Knoxville man charged with killing mother and cat heads to grand jury

The suspect was accused of fatally stabbing his mother as well as a cat.

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. — A Louisville murder case is heading to a grand jury in March.

Zachary Hayes is charged with killing his mother last fall, and earlier this week a Blount County judge ordered his case to be sent to a grand jury, who's scheduled to hear it in March.

Hayes is being held on a bond of more than  $1 million at the Blount County Jail. He's charged with criminal homicide, abuse of a corpse, intentional killing of an animal and aggravated burglary connected to events police said occurred on Sept. 8.

The Blount County Sheriff's Office said that's when Hayes is accused of stabbing his mother, Kimberly Hayes, to death at a home on Samples Road in Louisville. Police said Hayes stabbed his mother multiple times, including after she died. He's also charged with stabbing and killing a cat that was in the home.

Investigators said they believe Zachary Hayes broke into his mom's house since pry marks were located on the frame of a storm door.

Officials said Zachary Hayes was arrested on Saturday, Sept. 9.

According to an Affidavit of Complaint, BCSO Detective Isaac Staley police interviewed Hayes after the stabbings.

"During subsequent interview with the defendant, a confession was obtained and the defendant provided specific information that corroborated scene, details and evidence that would only be known to the offender," Staley wrote.

The grand jury proceedings are scheduled for the second week of March.
