BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. — Improvements are on the way to more than 55 miles of road in Blount County.
The county is taking advantage of a program through the Tennessee Department of Transportation, known as State Aid, to update ten roads.
"State Aid-eligible roads are funded 98% with state funds and 2% with local funds," said Blount County Highway Department Planner Don Walker. "This is an incredible value for the citizens of Blount County."
State Aid funds are picking up the $2 million tab being used for the project, while money from Blount County will be used for the final 2%, Walker said.
Roads included in the project are Blair Loop, Old Chilhowie Road, Big Springs Road, Ridge Road, Old Nyles Ferry Road, Chilhowie View Road, Indian Warpath Road, Nails Creek Road, North Wildwood Road and Martin Mill Pike.
Walker said Blount County already has contracts with TDOT for Blair Loop Road and Old Chilhowie Road.
TDOT spokesperson Mark Nagi said the project is for the resurfacing of around 3 miles of road in that area.
Nagi said the total cost of that project is around $424,000 and is scheduled to be finished by the end of November.
Paving could start in Blount County in March or April -- weather permitting -- Walker said, adding that the Blair Loop and Old Chilhowie Road paving will happen first.
Blount County's highway superintendent said it's important to upgrade roads.
"Well-maintained roads are safer to travel, cause less wear and tear on vehicles and provide efficient access for first responders during emergencies," Superintendent Jeff Headrick said. "In addition, having an efficient roadway system is vital to tourism and attracting businesses to our region."
