Amber Alert lifted; 6-week-old baby found safe

HYATTSVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) — A six-week-old baby girl has been found safely by authorities.

An amber alert was issued on Wednesday for an the abducted baby from Annandale, Va. The baby was recovered in Hyattsville, Md.

Police determined that Child Protective Services (CPS) had a court order to remove the baby from the home. After CPS staff could not locate the baby or her mother, they contacted police.

Police were looking for baby Liz Khatun who was believed with her mother, 31-year-old Flora Khatun.

Fairfax County police believed the baby girl was in "extreme danger." A source told WUSA9 that the mother's parental rights had been terminated.

FBI agents hustled out of a Hyattsville apartment carrying a car seat with a baby inside. Six-week-old Liz Khatun didn’t cry and appeared healthy, as agents offered her a bottle.

After the baby was taken away, WUSA9 knocked on the door of her mother, Flora Khatun. She was inconsolable.

Minutes later, police rushed in again, this time taking Khatun away in handcuffs.

It was the latest development in a chaotic afternoon, that began with an Amber Alert issued statewide in Virginia for the mother accused of abducting the baby.

Khan was last seen Tuesday at this Fairfax County Family Services office in Annandale. There, she learned of a court order to remove baby Liz from her home. She fled, without revealing the baby’s whereabouts. A location unknown until a source shared them with WUSA9.

Khatun is behind bars in Prince George’s County, awaiting extradition to Fairfax County where she faces parental abduction charges

This is not the first time Khatun has been under investigation by Child Protective Services. Sources told WUSA9's Andrea McCarren that the courts terminated her parental rights for four of her other five children.

Police say Khatun appealed for her parental rights in May. She was going to court on Thursday to face parental abduction charges.
